Title: Elliptic cohomology via conformal field theories?

Abstract: I will report on joint work with Peter Teichner the eventual goal of which it is to give a geometric construction of elliptic cohomology. After motivating elliptic cohomology as the 'home' of the family Witten genus, I will explain our conjecture that the spectrum representing elliptic cohomology can be build from spaces of conformal field theories.
